Museum introduces Leo Fong Biography
- (NewMediaWire) - June 03, 2020 - Burbank, CA – Leo Fong is considered one of the earliest pioneers of Chinese kung fu in America. A close friend of the late martial arts icon, Bruce Lee, Fong was instrumental in playing a key role in spreading the art throughout America. This biography, which is part of the Martial Arts History Museum biography series, introduces this amazing individual and how he overcame prejudice and racism and made an impact on the world.
Born in China but raised in Arkansas in the 1930s, Fong was one of only a handful of Asians in the state. Confronted with racism as a young child, Fong was forced to learn martial arts to defend himself. From the boxing gym to learning kung fu, Fong was able to transform his life and became one of the biggest advocates for the arts.
Inducted into the Martial Arts History Museum’s Hall of Fame in 2006, Fong became one of Bruce Lee’s closest friends. In fact, after the publicized fight between kung fu sifu Wong Jack Man and Lee, it was Fong’s suggestion for Lee to enhance his art by studying other styles such as tae kwon do and judo.
According to Fong, “Bruce told me that during the fight, he was chasing Wong and felt limited using wing chun kung fu, which was Bruce’s style. I told him that here in America, there are many other styles he can learn from, which he did.”
The biography of Leo Fong is one of a collection of a series of biographies released by the museum to preserve the history and life of its hall of fame inductees and significant achievers. “These biographies will be part of the museum’s hall of fame wall in the near future,” adds museum president Michael Matsuda.
